The Stress Reduction Clinic at Yoga Hillsboro

The Stress Reduction Clinic is Yoga Hillsboro's collection of classes based on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The clinic's mission is to support people who face some of the biggest challenges of life: stress, chronic pain, illness, and trauma. Our courses are a skilled, professional complement to medical care and therapy. Healthcare professionals and therapists make referrals to us when treatment is completed for those patients who want to learn to participate more fully in their own health and well being. Students travel from as far as Vancouver, Eugene, Corvallis, Salem and the Oregon Coast for our courses. Many doctors and therapists have attended our courses. Our 8-Week MBSR Program is modeled on those of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where Brant recevived his certification to teach MBSR. MBSR: FIND YOUR WISDOM TO FACE STRESS, PAIN, & ILLNESS
Over 30 years ago Jon Kabat-Zinn began offering a program of stress reduction to patients and physicians at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. His program combined stress medicine and psychology with meditation, gentle yoga, experiential education, group dynamic exercises, and aspects of Buddhist psychology. Download our essay about MBSR

He dubbed this 8-week 30 hour training Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Training or MBSR. The 8 week program is described in detail in Jon's landmark book Full Catastrophe Living. A rich background of scientific research and subsequent books by Jon and others has made MBSR one of the most effective and respected methods of helping people though the most stressful challenges of life: heart disease, cancer, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, asthma, multiple sclerosis, sleep problems and much more. Download our MBSR research summary.

MBSR is a way of systematically, directly and thoughtfully working with the catastrophes of life and learning to accept and take charge even in the face of these challenges. It's a way of finding your inherent wisdom to face stress, chronic pain, and illness. Read our newspaper article about mindfulness and medicine.

Since that first program tens of thousands of people around the world have taken the course. Two decades of published research as well as tests and evaluations at our Clinic indicates that the majority of those who have taken the course report:

  • Reduction in pain levels
  • A lasting ability to cope with stress
  • Lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms.
  • A greater ability to relax
  • Greater energy

While MBSR is an educational program and not a substitute for medical treatment or psychotherapy it has proven helpful for those with a variety of challenges once treatment or therapy are complete including:

  • Stress from job, family, finances
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Chronic anxiety or panic
  • Gastrointestinal distress
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleeplessness
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

We teach on-going MBSR courses. We train and study regularly at the Center for Mindfulness at the UMass Medical School and elsewhere to provide the best and most relevant experience for participants. Perhaps more importantly we share our personal experience of on-going personal practice of the methods we teach in our MBSR courses.

THE MBSR 8 WEEK PROGRAM
Our 8-Week Program is modeled on the original one at the UMass Medical School: 8 weeks long, a two and one-half hour class each week, and a daylong retreat class on a Saturday or Sunday. Our curriculum includes these:

  • Practical learning of mindfulness meditation practices
  • Mindful movement, gentle stretching and adaptive Yoga for anyone
  • Exercises that help you enhance awareness in your daily life
  • Instruction that is tailored to you personally
  • Group dialogue and learning exercises
  • Daily homework assignments
  • Three audio CD's and a workbook

MBSR is challenging by design and asks you to make a commitment to attend 30 hours of class time along with daily homework.

We hold the Program in our own well-equipped, safe and comfortable classrooms. To register for the program you must attend a 2-hour Introduction/Orientation Course or have an interview with your teacher and submit a completed application. Check our schedule for dates and times of these free Orientation Courses.

We work with each student to make sure tuition is appropriate and affordable. We offer payment plans and some scholarships as needed. A growing number of health plans and employee benefit wellness plans will reimburse for our course. Check with your healthcare provider, insurance company and HR manager to navigate the process of possible reimbursement. We will provide you a receipt for the course. Call or email to discuss tuition or other registration questions. We will hold the 8-Week MBSR Program in 2012 starting on these dates: January 19th, April 5th, June 28th and September 27th.
